Theo Jemison unveils some rare footage of Gil Scott-Heron's last performance in Los Angeles back in 2009 before his death last year. The late and great musician showcased live renditions "Winter In America," "We Almost Lost Detroit" and "The Other Side" amongst others in an intimate setting. "Gil was never a brother to take the power of words lightly, and this monumental night was a shining example of his affective and explosive concoction of humor, intellect, wit and humility. It was one of my highest honors as a DJ to open up for him that night. We all knew we were being treated to an especially intimate show, a candid experience that turned the El Rey theatre into family time around his kitchen table. Perhaps it was the fact that his daughter Gia was in the crowd. The night was a future memory in the making. Little did we know that that would be the last time Los Angeles would have the honor of hearing, learning from, and laughing along with Gil. He passed shortly after this concert, but if bodies are temporary, words are eternal - and as a man of words Gil Scott-Heron is now a man of eternity. Rest In Peace, Gil." - Jeremy Sole (KCRW)

Following the passing of influential spoken word artist Gil Scott-Heron, Canongate is set to publish an autobiography called The Last Holiday: A Memoir in January. The literary piece will offer a recount on Scott-Heron's involvement with the civil rights movement and his experience touring 41 cities with Stevie Wonder in 1980-81, where he and Wonder successfully campaigned to have Martin Luther King's birthday recognized as a national holiday.

After launching his recording career in 1970, Gil Scott-Heron's art embraced soul, jazz, blues and the spoken word while also maintaining a rather strong political note, as can be heard on his arguably most known song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." The Last Holiday: A Memoir hits shelves on January 16, 2012.

Here comes the latest release from the acclaimed Shaolin Jazz project. Gerald Watson and DJ 2-Tone Jones present their capsule project, entitled The Gil Scott Suite, which is a three-track EP that combines the talents of Heron and the Wu-Tang Clan. The project further features album cover art designed by Shamona Stokes, the winner of the SHAOLIN JAZZ – Album Cover Design Contest, as shown above. There's been an abundance of Gil Scott-Heron remixes and collabos as of late, more notably is his recent collabo project with Jamie xx. Today though, we get a tribute from a man who's been promoting this genre of music for well over 20 years and is more familiar with Gil Scott-Heron's lineage of work far beyond what many know him for, which is his famous quote, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." The creator, Gilles Peterson has been the BBC Radio host of underground funk, soul and hip-hop for over two decades and is all too familiar with Gil Scott-Heron's history. A memorial service in honors of the recently-passed away music legend Gil Scott-Heron was held in Harlem's Riverside Church today. Kanye West was one of the artists that paid respect to the spoken word artist. 'Ye performed an emotional rendition of "Lost in the World" that samples the refrain "Who will survive in America?" from Scott-Heron's well-known poem, "Comment #1."

Furthermore, three of Scott-Heron's frequent backup musicians turned in a moving performance of "Better Days Ahead" and "The Bottle." In addition, Grammy-winning producer Malcolm Cecil, Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets, Scott-Heron's wife of 10 years Brenda Sykes, daughter Gia-Scott Heron, and assorted family and friends were in attendance. The emotional highlight was given by Scott-Heron's daughter Gia who read the prose "Time" in honors of her father and sang "The Rose" by Amanda McBroom, popularized by Bette Midler.
