Pharoahe Monch and Red Bull unveil the latest visual effort from Monch'slast year's W.A.R (We Are Renegades). In the Terrance Nance-directed video for "Stil Standing," the rapper chronicles his autobiographical tale of his battle with asthma from an early age. The track was produced M-Phazes and features a soulful contribution from Jill Scott who also makes an appearance in the vid.

High times continue for Drake. After his sophomore album Take Care has been certified platinum, his Lil Wayne-powered single "The Motto" has also surpassed the one million mark in sales. Thus, the single will climb up five spots from 21 to 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In addition, the title track featuring Rihanna has reached the airwaves and is heating up radio stations across the nation.

The shutdown of controversial file-sharing site Megaupload by the Justice Department and the arrest of its notorious founder Kim "Dotcom" Schmitz has not surprised too many industry insiders. RIAA's Vice President of Strategic Data Analysis, Joshua P. Friedlander, has issued a statement, titled "Why Closing Megaupload Matters," regarding this situation. Friedlander stresses the fact that digital music sales rose after file sharing service LimeWire was shutdown in 2010, implying that the same could happen following Megaupload's shutdown.

"Digital music sales that had been flagging jumped in the month immediately after the Limewire shutdown, and have remained stronger ever since. Collectively, this evidence strongly suggests that the shutdown of illegal sites helps create a thriving and diverse digital marketplace. It encourages users to go to legitimate sites, and enables great new services to be launched - like Spotify, which launched in the US last year and quickly signed up millions of new users. It's always reassuring when the data we see in the market reflects what we thought was just common sense."

The New York Times reports that similar file-sharing sites are taking preventative measures in order to avoid the same legal consequences as Megaupload. 4shared, FileServe, FileJungle, UploadStation, VideoBB, VideoZer, UploadBox and more have either altered their services to stop allowing public sharing, stopped allowing U.S. users, or shut down completely.

Facebook has launched Listen With Friends, a next step into incorporating music into their social media network experience. The service will allow users to listen to music at the same time as their friends and discuss the tunes using Facebook Chat. According to reports, up to 50 people will be able to listen to a song at the same time and discuss it. When a Facebook user is listening to a song, a music note will appear next to their name in the chat sidebar and the real-time news ticker. In order to listen in, users can simply hover over that friend’s name, then click the “Listen With” button (see image below). At the moment, the service will only work if both parties have access to the same online music programs, which is currently Spotify and Rdio. However, ZDNet claims that more services are set to be announced in the future. Facebook product designer Alexandre Roche said of the social network latest feature:

"You can listen to the same song, at the exact same time—so when your favorite vocal part comes in you can experience it together, just like when you're jamming out at a performance or dance club."

During a conversation with LA Weekly, Odd Future DJ and one-half of The Internet, Syd tha Kyd talked about her sexuality and why she decided to ‘come out.’ A rare instance within the world of hip-hop, with FADER pointing out that it’s not been since Brooklyn rapper Queen Pen addressed the issue back in 1997 on her LP My Melody, referring to “Girlfriend” a riff on Me’Shell NdegeOcello’s “If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night).” Read what Syd had to say below.

“I decided to do it because I wish I had someone like that [an openly gay female artist] while I was coming up. People write on my Tumblr just thanking me for making the video, saying that I really inspire them, and they want to be like me. But I wasn’t always this way, this comfortable with myself, and I remember what that was like. So I figure, fuck it. Everyday people aren’t given this opportunity and I realize that. And I didn’t at first. I thought I was just lucky to be along for the ride… We didn’t make the video to make a statement about Odd Future and homophobia. It was to showcase a song by the Internet… the world is just now starting to become open about homosexuality. I can’t really say I’ve contributed to that, and I’m grateful to the people who have set a path for me to be who I am today. And I guess in that sense I want to return the favor."

Each new year brings us a new award season. 2012 is certainly no different. Young Money's First Lady Nicki Minaj has confirmed that she will perform at this year's Grammy Award festivities. The Queens native was added to the event's lineup which also includes Kelly Clarkson, the Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars and Jason Aldean. Ms. Minaj has been nominated in four categories, including Best New Artist, whereas Kanye West leads the list with seven nominations and the Foo Fighters, Adele and Mr. Mars follow up with six nods each. It has yet to be seen if Adele and Yeezy will also grace the stage with a live performance. The show airs live on CBS on February 12.

With a release date set for December 6, the might Roots crew unveil some behind the scenes impressions for their 13th studio album Undun. Besides showing the Philadelphia crew's busy work, the visual also unveils the official artwork for their first concept album which is said to be influenced by orchestral chamber music. undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented–postmortem–and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.

Honoring his latest mashup creation, DOSVEC turns in an accompanying visual interpretation and blends in the likes of B.o.B’s “Beast Mode” over a great dubstep beat by Zeds Dead, and even invites Aretha Franklin to join the fun. Watch it above and download it here.
