Drake: “I’m The First Person to Successfully Rap and Sing”
By Aymen Ahmed / News / July 27, 2012 / 4179 Views

"There were people who incorporated melody before me, but I would deem myself the first person to successfully rap and sing." That was what Drake had to say on the subject of rappers who also sang, or vice versa. Speaking to The Jewish Chronicle, the Toronto native stated while people had used melody on rap songs before him, he believes he was the first artist to truly legitimize the practice. Is he right in his statement? Who do you think has rapped and sung on tracks before him to a commendable level? Leave your answers in the comments below, and find the entire conversation here.

Don't get it twisted I love anything and everything Pharrell puts out but dude is underrated as fuck

  • Enbeau Chíc

    Andre 3000 maybe?

  • http://www.facebook.com/twiltman Tristan Wiltman

I think people are loosing sight of the fact that Andre 3000 spent more than half of his career as a duo
so he warrants less validity as an independent successful
singer/rapper. Also why is everyone bringing Mos up like this guy ever
topped the charts, Mos has substance but is he a success? No

Lauryn Hill is a valid entry for a "successful" artist who spent an
equal parts rapping and singing beyond that others are just genre
    hopping

Probably a misunderstanding but maybe they meant sing-rapping, like melodic rap. But either he still wouldn't be the first to successfully do it. Unless, maybe if he meant as his sole device of delivery, then I guess it could be argued. There's even a whole thread about it

How about a number one Drake song? Thought so.
Like I said love Pharrell but we're talking about successful rapper/singers not producer/features

  • Mack

As true as that is, that's him being a successful producer. This was about sing and rapping successfully. I love Pharrell and NERD but their music is highly underrated when it comes to the vocal parts. Production wise? Everyone looks forward to hearing something with P's name on it.

  • cherry

    pharrell was waaaay before drake.

  • dan

    haha drake cant even sing...

  • Bloc

this might be true if he actually could sing! you never see him sing live. Doods vocal chords need a wheelchair on records too

    Hella good by no doubt
    money maker by ludacris
drop it like its hot by snoop dogg...shall i go on?

Just because he's behind the scenes doesn't mean he's not puttin out number one tracks. Drake may be successful but he's far from authentic. I appreciate the music thats put out under his name, but lets be honest he's not doing much more than going to the studio to lay down vocals.

I don't think I can make it clearer that as an established act you cannot define Pharrell in the same category as Drake. Drake is a stand alone singer/rapper that is his sole grind P does many things and though he excels in them under his sole body of works as a performer whether it be in N.E.R.D or "In my Mind" he is less successful commercially. I'm not legitimizing Drake or saying that hes better I'm simply playing the numbers game that defines an artist as a success, people need to think objectively man.
