deadmau5: “I Sold Out by Going Dubstep”

It is no secret that deadmau5 is never shying away from expressing his honest opinion when it comes to the music industry. While being critical regarding his peers, the Canadian producer is also not always in full tune with his own actions, as he revealed during a conversation with CBC's Q Radio.

"It's a conduit now for previously mainstream pop acts to use. I've only ever made one dubstep track and I will admit I only did it because it was cool at the time... I'm not a fan of dubstep but I figured 'Okay, well I'm sure I can engineer something that's palatable or on par with the whole Skrillex thing that everyone is into.

I sold out on that one track - that would be me admitting yes, I absolutely sold out because I did it for the popularity factor... But now a lot of pop acts like she who shall not be named [Madonna] and a whole bunch of other people are going to use the whole dance/rave thing that died in 1992 that somehow got revived as mainstream dance music and they're going to use that and sell it out and over-saturate it."

Speaking of Madonna, he also criticized the Queen of Pop for seemingly endorsing club drugs:

"I'm not stupid, I know what's going on with this whole thing. I'm wearing this mouse head and I'm watching kids get carried out by paramedics over the front railing and I'm playing. Sometimes I just want to stop the show, it's not cool and I really don't like it and it upsets me. So for her to just go with it and have a great time. I just thought, fuck it and give her a blast because it's fucked up."

    If you're deadmau5, saying you hate the shit everyone's on during your shows is pretty interesting considering 96% of the reason they are interested in your music IS BECAUSE OF THE ROLLS/MOLLY/EX/WHATEVER. Just saying.

    I'm a big fan... But I wonder if he'd be willing to refund all the tickets that have been sold in the last three years to fans caught up in this dance music "revival"? I get tired of hearing him complain about the state of dance and yet ride the wave and appear on the cover of Rolling Stones" dance article. He was around before, and will be after mainstream burns out again, but he's benefiting from all of the hype as well.

    Big fan of Deadmau5 and love that he never shys away from expressing his opinion. I have to agree with him about the drug issue. House shows have become more about 15 yr old girls dressing like whores and doing molly just to say they did rather than about the music. I like electro but the whole scene is not for me, it just seems manufactured and as a whole not about the music. Obviously there are the pioneers that will always keep it real like Joel but it's definitely getting out of control. And fuck Madonna she can fade into oblivion for all i care, theres something to be said about knowing when to bow out gracefully, shes just making herself look bad. She's a legend but this is not her scene and shes showing that in spades with those comments.

    Naw, f**k that. There's nothing wrong with putting out a dubstep song. He put out what he felt was right at the time. Deadmau5 needs to stop being such a hipster and support the work he puts out. No need to backtrack now that everybody and their momma is catching on to dubstep. Just be happy you were there before all of these other artists were.
