Lupe Fiasco – Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)

After receiving the cover art as well as getting an audio snippet, Lupe delivers the full drop to "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)." The heavily sampled cut is an undeniably smooth delivery, which expectantly highlights the political artist speaking on some heavy matters. Regardless, Lupe's flow is on point, but we have a feeling that some people will not be too happy with the reworking. Do you think he did it justice? Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album comes later this year.

  • bob

i swear no one listens to lupe's lyrics.. he's been spitting the same shit since day one, he just happened to switch up the beats on FOTP and Lasers.. great stuff as usual

  • MechaZain

LUPE! Discussing real shit. Spitting real shit. And tops it off with a reworking of a classic. I don't care what nobody says. I got four letters for them. D-O-P-E

    LUPE HAS NO SWAG
he looks retarded and confused, his flow is the same on every song, every song on the cool was a boring ass story, and his voice sounds like hes still in junior high

Pete sampled that joint by tom scott like noone else could. The work is so original, the guy with the stupid name Chill shouldn't have remade the joint which everybody knows is personal to pete. Lupe should have stuck with rapping over the original on a mixtape if he absolutely had to use it.
I'm glad Lupe got his flow back though.

get off his dick, it's probably due to everyone telling him lasers was shit he's gone back to this

  • bob

i don't doubt that the reaction to Lasers had an effect on his beat selection, the part that I don't understand is the reaction to Lasers and FOTP.. obviously there were a couple tracks on Lasers that were done to appease Atlantic like I Don't Wanna Care Right Now and Outta My Head, but the lyrics were there on I'm Beamin, Shining Down,  Letting Go, Beautiful Lasers, State Run Radio, Break the Chain, All Black Everything, and Words I Never Said.  It's just the fact that the tracks were over more electro/rock sounding production that everyone said Lupe fell off.  I just get frustrated with people who claim to listen to Lupe for his lyrics, then say that his recent work has been trash when the only real difference in his music from his early work was the production, not the content

Im sick of Lupe talking about all this shit about the world but not doing a damn thing to change it. It's not like his lyrics are inspirational, they go right through you.

ghana and horn of africa peace to eritrea and ethiopea ^__^

his lyrics and flows have most certainly been dumbed down. it's actually pretty noticeable. his thoughts are just more streamlined than the effortless intricacy and relevance that is food and liquor and the cool and especially his earlier mixtapes. it's super disappointing coming from lu though. dude's my favorite rapper.

  • bob

you make a fair point, i just feel like he has more of a range now, i think that his flow hasn't been 'dumbed down', however. he just has a multitude of different flows now like on Building Minds Faster.  he set out to make Lasers a simpler album lyrically as he stated and he does tracks like VaVa Voom, but at the same time has Go To Sleep, SLR, Black Radio, What U Want, and Joaquin Phoenix.. To me Around My Way is the equivalent of Hurt Me Soul from F&L which wasn't laced with metaphors and was more straight forward with what its references, but I think he can still come with the stuff that we heard on the first two albums.  With the release of American Terrorist III coupled with Go To Sleep and Black Radio I think he'll come with a similar sound from the first album.  Those tracks really show that he still has the story telling ability and metaphors that we heard in his earlier work.

  • bob

lupe climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for the clean water crisis, has the Lupe Fiasco foundation which helps inner city kids, and he has been heavily involved in the Occupy Wall Street Movement.. so i would say he is doing a few things

  • Jmatthews

Would rather listen to the original. How does he sleep at night?

  • SHUTTYY

    APE SHALL NOT KILL APE.

Words I Never Said and All Black Everything were great. But the rest of the album was pretty much unlistenable. Straight terrible production and hooks. And I loved those first two records, Lupe was my favorite up until Lasers.
