Kanye West – Lost in the World
By Aymen Ahmed / Video / May 4, 2012 / 6017 Views

Kanye West linked up with film-maker Ruth Hogban to create the visual for "Lost in the World," which comes off his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy LP. The video sees West being filmed for the most part from a birds-eye view with no eye contact with the camera, his face remaining concealed beneath a rhinestone-lined baseball cap. Not forgetting the usual element of models in oversized t-shirts dancing interpretively. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, who features on the song, is missing from the visual but it doesn't detract from the clips overall outcome. Like many of Kanye's previous visuals, this can be viewed more as a short film with artistic and adorning features than an ordinary music video.

  • GJeff

  • Kuba

you're from Poland? I am and I agree, there's mistake, anyway I'm glad that there's polish translation, while not many languages are used :D

i used to really look forward to kanye west music videos an now i stop and think hmmm do i really wanna watch this ? his videos have gone so far down hill this video was borderline awful kanye needs to stop trying to be "artistic"

  • Frank f’s glued-on toupee

what would you have done instead for this video? Instead of just berating him for being "artistic"? So easy to criticize yet no alternative is offered - the definition of a MORON.

horrible. it was better in the runaway film.

  • Johnson

shut up - you don't need to offer an alternative to criticize music - thats like saying stuart scott needs to be better than kobe to criticize him on ESPN - does Frank have to be more creative than kanye to realize that Frank doesn't like his art?  NO FUCKER

  • Theraflu

i rather the version in the movie

  • Jarren

I thought the video was great. All of the camera angles, choreography, and cinematography speak to the word "lost"

  • guest

i think video's should display visual aspects pertaining to personal experiences or inspirations from the artist and in doing so getting a point across in a visually appealing fashion for us viewers. However, i think his shit as of late have been really abstract mayybbe lacking in soul and or heart maybe not. maybe as an artist this is where he is but it is what it is.

  • SHUTTYY

    I LIKE IT.

  • Trina

no, it's like saying stuart scott needs to annunciation more and make less eye contact with the camera.  franks personal creativity compared to the video is irrelevant to his opinion.  frank just needs to give a deeper analysis on y the video sucks instead of giving out a non-directional, lost opinion. as for me i love the video. the black and white photographic images leaves abstraction that you can interpret  on many different levels yet keeping your attention more like a painting as oppose to a 90's story line music video. the images insinuate height and dramatize a sense of free-falling and i think it correlates to the song harmoniously.  the video is amazing in my opinion.

  • Vcheung

can't beat Runaway.  when he's running in his suit through the woods?

    amazing.

  • frank f

you people are all ridiculous you tell me that im berating kanye for having an opinion on his video when youre the one berating me for my opinion you art school faggots needa back the fuck off first off this video was boring and plain it reminded me alot of the all of the lights video with the same style intro but it was just all black and grey (which was stolen from another movie "so artistic to steal other peoples ideas" this video is minimalistic and boring its flat out lazy and all of you faggots who "critique" are just looking for answers in this nothingness and interpretting it yourself when the video most likely had little to no effort actually involved, kanyes videos used to have a story to them they were more visual and actually enjoyable to watch instead of a bunch of birds eye view shots of the top of his head an a girl dancing really fast if you honestly like this video than youre pathetic and plain and simple a dick rider im an actual kanye fan i listen to all of his music not just this new shit which actually isnt that great i listen to college drop out and late registration all the time my beautiful dark twisted fantasy and watch the throne barely get any play and i go to all the kanye west concerts, SHIT IM THE KID WHO STARTED THE FASHION NIGHT OUT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF SOHO WHEN KANYE WALKED BY THE BAPE STORE so suck on my dick u latte sippin art school faggots

  • frank f

second of all i didnt know that im not allowed to have an opinion for something without remaking the entire video on paper for all you assholes who just fall inlove with everything that says KANYE WEST, seriously im probably the biggest actual kanye west fan on the entire page here getting hated on the most because this is a really bad video its like do film critics rewrite the plot of movies that get bad reviews NO its a fucking opinion asshole take it and move on but dont sit around and tell people theyre morons because you dont agree with their opinion that makes YOU THE MORON

  • Trina

you almost got it. so close! so basically it took a whole lot of irrelevant ranting about people being "dick riders" and "faggots" for you to only say it was MINIMALISTIC with many BIRDS-EYE-VIEW SHOTS and seemed EFFORTLESS

seems like when you actually talk about THE VIDEO you have positive feedback. no one is berating you.

    ps. i'm an engineer student

  • frank f

like i think of this video as a lil wayne song, it sucks and everyone has a different opinion on what it means but nobody actually knows because theres no explanation from the artist them self of what it actually means so basically youre just sitting here making assumptions of what you think "the video means or what kanye intended" when you actually have no clue at all and you just use big words to make yourself sound better or have a better understanding of the video because you must of had a art teacher who "enlightened" you and made you the master on all things art and music related, i seriously hate when people cant just stick to giving their own opinion on something and have to attack other peoples point of views on something when nobody asked you for your opinion on someone elses opinion when this whole discussion board is intended to be about the music video itself which is a shitty music video watch any music video off the college drop out or late registration albums shit even the videos off of graduation, this video is a cross between homecoming and all of the lights if they had a retarded baby, maybe if you listened or watched more kanye west videos youd know this but infact you just like to complain about other peoples opnions not being in depth enough, well is this in depth enough for you bitch ?

  • frank f

wow i actually said alot more than 3 words about the video and none of them were positive i called the video boring and lazy and a rip off his other music videos which were scenes stolen from other peoples movies nowhere in any of my statements was anything possitive about this video at all, i kinda think youre retarded now if thats all you got from what i said, i think you should stick to engineering or atleast attempting to learn how to engineer since youre just a "student" and stop critiquing music as if its a painting because it isnt so shut the fuck up

  • http://thedadaphilosophy.tumblr.com/ DadaPhilosophy

I hate how everyone is soooo critical when it comes to Kanye. It's not the best video ever, nor is it the worst. It's a good video. Call it lazy if you want. You probably don't know what went into making this video, or how long it took. Black and white isn't "original", but it's not bad to use. I think the lack of color goes with the song. It is artistic, and people need to stop bitching about him being "too artistic". Call me a "dickrider" if you want. I'm a big Kanye fan, but I can also admit his faults. This isn't that bad of a video to be complaining about it. Ofcourse it could be WAY better and creative, but after the Runaway video, this shouldn't have even been necessary. It's far from lazy.

  • Riri*Aiko

so basically, you said NOTHING bout the music video again.

well in m opinion, the video was great.  as with any abstract art like this video, the purpose is to strike emotion instead of fallow a storyline.  abstraction is meant for personal interpretation in order for people to be led into these more interpersonal types of feelings that might be struck differently by someone else witnessing the images on screen. overall the chords of pictures are great with the messages in the lyrics of being lost and of having despair.

i hardly think that calling people "dick riders" "faggots" and "bitches" is much of any kind of opinion on a MUSIC VIDEO lol ; )

  • jsteezy

everyone forgot about your album Kanye after you came out with WTT.

  • frank f

@4421d3bc3a09fdb96b4dd7febf7430be:disqus actually i gave plenty of input into my thoughts on the video, youre just to ignorant to notice them or mention them and only pick out 5 words out of the 4 posts that i made, also ITS FOLLOW NOT FALLOW your comment no longer has validation

  • Riri*Aiko

it's positive not possitive, it's you're not  youre, it's rip off of his not rip off his, it's that's not thats.

Why kanye always touch his head in videos ?

  • frank f

@trina wow none of those were spelling mistakes i just chose to not use apostrophes like whatre you talking about its the same words with or without the apostrophe and rip off his is not a spelling error because you decided of should be in the middle sorry you dont know how to spell the word follow thats pretty elementary and youd pick out all the places where i didnt use apostrophes to try and make yourself seem smarter youre pathetic this is an informal writing and punctuation isnt necessary but learn to spell retard

how are you gonna tell an artist to stop being artistic?

  • http://twitter.com/blackinjapan Ron Simms Jr.

id actually say thats more the definition of hating and/or having an opinion and/or nonconstructive criticism

  • Caels

Personally, I was looking forward to Vernon and West pairing up for this video and seeing what they'd create together, but now, after seeing the direction Ye took, I'm not surprised he decided not to take part (assuming they ever discussed it).
Yet again Ye's gone for a strange alternative to the standard music video, focusing more on his gang of dancing girls and obscure camera angles, then actually forming a visual aid to the song. I have no idea how they managed it, but for a song with so much depth and size, the over-usage of clouds actually had a claustrophobic effect. The camera work made it difficult to focus on one thing, and with no apparent story line, the whole video seemed to lack direction. It would have been nice to see more of Kanye, after all, that's what people wanna see in a Kanye video, not 4 minutes of various women rubbing themselves......wait...
However, this isn't the first time Martin Louis the King Jr's has cheaply executed his "artistic vision" and let that ego of his overshadow a simple task, nor will it be the last. We all know the only person Kanye is competing with is himself, and unfortunately, sometimes getting one up on yourself can have the opposite outcome... but not this time.Maybe we're missing something. There's too much here to have nothing. Perhaps this is exactly what we're meant to be thinking, and every constructive criticism made was part of some intricate plan. This was never meant to be a simple 'judge after one thought' effort, nor was it meant to be an MTV video of the week. You'll find, once you scratch the surface, and dig deeper into Ye's design, you start to unravel genius, and begin to understand the grand scheme of things.Once again, somehow, some way, through all of his madness, Mr. West has accurately accomplished the very concept he set out to, and managed to somewhat poetically focus every single idea in the video to one word; Lost.
