Common: “I Like Drake’s Music”
by Aymen Ahmed / News / January 19, 2012 / 5084 Views

In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Common stated that in spite of an ongoing lyrical feud between himself and Drake, he’s quite happy to admit that he respects the Toronto native’s artistic ability. “I think he makes good music” the rapper/actor stated, "He's definitely said some real clever things and made some cool songs. I like his music."

The quarrel between the pair initially started out with subliminal references during live performances and on Common's track, "Sweet." Eventually peaking with Drake throwing down the gauntlet on the original version of Rick Ross’s “Stay Schemin” track, and Common coming back with a dynamic unofficial remix – mockingly referring to Drizzy as “Canada Dry.”

But it seems that the Chicago native has turned a corner regarding the ongoing saga, stating the following revelations on the matter.

"I don't think I had anything to prove.. I just felt like somebody stepped and challenged me, so I had to step into the ring. He said some things that I thought were directed at me, so I had to address it back.”

"I feel like I said what I had to say, and I'm just going to let it be at that point... Now, if something else happens, then I'll just have to act accordingly. But right now, I feel like, man, I said what I needed to say about this situation on record."

"It's nothing like, 'Oh man, it's so personal.' It's just the art of rhyming, man. The art of rhyming!"

At this point, we can only wonder what's next in hip-hop's latest high-profile rivalry. Perhaps a Jay-Z & Nas-style reconciliation, followed by a collaborative album?

Common is pussing out, drakes not going to respond, lamest beef ever.

  • This whole thing was so brutal. Minus ten ten respect points for each. That leaves Common at a +65 and Drake at a -10.

buncha pussies, never even addressed each other directly. what kinda people solely handle beef through singing about it subliminally on R&B songs? hahahha

The way I see it, which may or may not coincide with any of you readers' thought processes, I think Common is very old school hip hop. Kind of like a b-boy cypher, one guy kind of baits you in, you respond. Plain and simple. You can walk out and be like, "Oh man, that was ill. You got me with that one move/line."

Some of you guys take hip hop too seriously. Expecting-gun-fights-and-shit-so-you-can-wear-your-favorite-artists'-face-on-a-tall-tee ass fools.

    @BoBun:disqus

    perfect explanation.

  • Goodmusicbaby

so he goes from calling drakes shit "hoe music" to "I think he makes good music"

  • http://flavors.me/dnwilliams dnwilliams

    Friendliest beef EVER.

  • Obviousmuch

hoe music... music for the hoes. yah, sounds about right

  • KTA

i think common completely forgot he started this beef with "sweet". he had somethin to say about drake and he said it (subliminally). now common backtrackin sayin drake fired first with stay schemin when really it was a response to common, he bowed out quicker than i thought he would..

  • EatTheEarth

Doesn't mean hoe music can't be good.

  • goldwatch

sweet was directed to anyone who fit the descripction in the hip-hop world, it just so happens that drake fits those shoes

  • KTA

ya that was his statement on some kind of radio show...but you're kidding yourself if you think common was talkin about anyone but drake initially.

Listen - T-Pain was Mr Autotune. When Jay-Z came out with DOA T-Pain didn't come out crying, that's because he knows "live by the sword, die by the sword". Everyone laughed at Kanye when he tried singing on 808. Weezy just got on with shit.

Bottom line - don't call yourself greatest rapper alive and then expect everyone else to sit back clapping in the rafters

youre totally right. they should strap up with their crews and have a big ass gun fight because all the best rap feuds end that way. Then whichever one ends up dying will be the best one and they'll get all the praises from people like you who wont think theyre pussies anymore.

I lost respect for Common on this one. I mean resulting to subliminal references on 'Sweet' no matter who its directed too is a bitch move. Then being one of the softest rappers in the game and calling another rapper 'soft' is jealous bitch move. If your a legend from the Golden Era and you feel in anyway threatened by someone you call a 'bitch' then why is that Common became insecure and attacked/responded its because deep down whether you have issues or not you know that talking about it is only a sign of weakness and just for that just like Kanye wrecked a part of his career for being a man who walked on stage and got booed I believe Common should now get his ass beat for being a 'nice' rapper trying to call another rapper 'nice'. Thats like a fat woman trying to call a thin woman fat. This is why I loose respect for the so called 'Legends'

  • Cheyne

Actually T-Pain did come out crying haha. He dissed Jay, and when Jay said it was more directed at people who used it as a fad. T-Pain apologied saying he overeacted and shit.
Drake isn't an emcee. He's simply a crossover artist who can occasionally spit some bars, and has mass commercial appeal.

Yup. After all Canada Dry isn't the only rapper to part-time make "hoe music" and Common isn't a killer. The beef isn't about who is the hardest its who is the smartest, most clever.

  • pajamez

why is he saying drake called him out first wasn't it the other way around

know you just feel that way cuz drake fits the description so well if you look at it that way, people were saying he was talking about wayne too, people just trynna get beef going... he kept saying the song is directed to hiphop in general, commons done this before....(NWA) people  getting salty bout another mans general opinions once again im sure he wasnt concerned with drake at all

I think there are alot of factors to consider in this beef. Lets look at it in a more political manner. Common released this album after his last one did quite poorly(lets be fair though, thats because he was purposely going for a club sound, which really isnt common's realm). He takes a subliminal shot at drake in his first "single" sweet, which he believes to have the best shot at spreading commercially (besides this song, celebrate was the only song to get video treatment...as far as i know). I personally believe that common looked at this subliminal shot at drake as a win/win situation(If it were to blow up, common would get the extra spotlight and he could defend himself by saying that he is a child of "hip hop",someone who believes in delivering clever, and subtle jabs at artists that claim they are the best). Later on, when asked if the statement was in fact about drake, common was able to answer in a very political manner. He claimed the line was meant for anyone that fit the description and that he in fact likes drake music. This is a great answer because it allows common to say something like this in the future when he is asked about the beef

" yeah..well that line was about drake but i didnt want to go out and say it, thats not what hip hop is about, or atleast the hip hop i grew up with. Some rappers in the past have been very direct with their beef, calling out artists so the whole world can see, but i think most artists believe in delivering clever, and witty lines....atleast in the beginning. Before Jay Z and Nas dropped Ether and Takeover, their back and forth disses werent direct, they took smart and subtle jabs at each other. I think Jay Z said it best when he said 'hip hop is like boxing, we take jabs at each other and if you cant handle it get out of the ring.'  Id like to elaborate on that metaphor and say that two boxers in the ring are professionals and that rappers like myself, jay z or lil wayne like to act in professional manner with our lines. When Jay z said that line about BABY money in HAM, he didnt just go out to the media and say FUCK lil wayne, i dont like his music, and wayne didnt respond with a FUCK YOU JAY for being subtle, instead he tried to capitalize on it and turn it into something better...and that exactly what he did and thats exactly why i love hip hop...Thats why when people interviewed me about that line in sweet i was sure to mention that i liked Drakes music, i wasnt trying to tell the world FUCK DRAKE, thats not the type of artist i am. I was actually surprised to see drake and 40's react so strongly to the song when they started blasting me on twitter, calling me a bitch and saying i wasnt hip hop...i mean..if you claim you  the best people are gonna be gunning for you and thats just part of the game. After he released stay scheming and started disrespecting my manhood for being subtle, then i realized i had to be more direct and let him know if we had to get into it, i could handle it on my end. But you know what, thats not who i am as an artist and i think at this point ive said pretty much everything i can say about that situation. Anything more would just be beating a dead horse, i got better things to do with my time"

Now just because i believe common has answered everything in a very political manner, i still agree with him (for the most part).  I believe theres a part of him that knew that he could get some limelight for dissing drake, and be able to defend himself in a very smart manner by alluding to traditions in hip hop. However, i dont think starting a beef and all the media associated with it was the main goal of his subtle lines.

I actually think drake acted kinda like a child in this whole situation. Hes so used to being on top right now that he and his producer 40, get so butthurt when someone who is respected in the hip hop community disses him. I think hes so used to being number one and being liked by everyone for being the nice guy that he is, it really upset him to hear common saying something like this. I bet he was in his room going "HOW COULD COMMON DO THIS TO ME??!" It seemed to really strike a nerve with drake and instead of initially getting back at common lyricallly, drake and 40 took to twitter where they released harsh statements. Maybe he should have followed Waynes example, brushed it off and come back with a way more clever line, one which would be heard by the whole world via one of his top 40 hits (im actually just thinking about this now, but its pretty interesting drake decided to take shots at common on a track that will get very little radio play..thoughts? maybe hes concerned about acting really hard on a top 40 track). Drake has an arsenal of soft common songs to help him with a clever line and i think this  would have been a much classier and professional first move. ....LOOK i just thought of one... "ya ex knows that U USED TO LOVE HER but to her it dont matter/ cuz she loves me now and her pockets way fatta ! (ok i know this isnt a great line but u get the point) . Anyways, just some thoughts from someone bored at work .
