Hypetrak DJ Mix Contest – Finalists

Back in November, we invited our readers to submit a 30-minute mix of their current favorite tunes. After we received numerous emails inquiring on the mix rules, we decided to facilitate them in order to keep the competition livelier. Thus, we will offer more flexible contest submissions in 2012. But for now, please show some love for our finalists below and let us know which one matches your taste the most. The winner will be announced on Monday, January 9.

    Don't understand why most of commenters above aren't providing any specifics, but anyways below are my thoughts. A recurring problem amongst Hayden's and Hugo's was lack of tactical use of vocals. 

    Hayden Raz

    -Mix of
    Pressure at the beginning was pretty awesome but the vocals didn’t exactly
    flow with the beat

    -Transition
    after Pressure into Hangover wasn’t smooth

    -Recurring
    theme: transitions into songs are abrupt (you can hear the dead -silence of
    the first track as the second one starts)

    -To be
    honest, got repetitive towards the last quarter of the set

     

    Kinsanity

    -Probably
    one of the best productions

    -Shows very
    good sense of which tracks work well together, especially in between
    transitions

    -Could have
    ended it stronger (seemed abrupt)

    -A solid
    grasp of fundamentals, without the need to use effects
    -consistent throughout the set

     

    rquez

    -Probably
    top two in production out of the bunch but my least enjoyable

     

    Hugo Chadi

    -Banging
    start to the set with Antidote/Miami to Ibiza
    mix
    -Vocals
    during Tung were annoying
    -Lost
    steam with the salsa-sounding/Mexican song (wasn’t sure what that song
    was)

    -Once
    again, needs to be more tactical with the vocals

    -Transitions
    were weak

    I Didn't play Pressure once... it is the Gotye Feat. Kimbra - Somebody that i used to know (Fabian Gray & Emanuele Remix) but thanks for the feedback! (i'll admit a few transitions are sloppy end to end mixing is not my style but the 10 songs in 30 mins forced it on me)

    props to the dj's who made the cut.

    Top two are definitely hayden raz and kinsanity.
    hugo's mix is sloppy and rquez is just not my taste in music.

    hayden raz's mix starts off great. he shows off his mixing skills and his feel for what songs go well together. Raz definitely knows how to build up the drops n the energy is definitely there, but towards the middle to the end, the energy level drops as he just transitions from one song to the next. all in all tho, this mix was top notch, definitely worthy of being a finalist.kinsanity's mix has tons of energy. you can tell this guy knows what he's doing, the complexity of some of his mixing is way up there. Check out the part where he drops Selecta, mixes it in and out of 2 different songs, and brings it back out just to make a point. also, i personally like the song choices (lol omg Traffic?!?!!!). The vocals are smooth and flow without sacrificing energy. He knows how to work transitions from bumpin house music, to melodic vocals, back to club-bangers. Can't say anything bad except that I wanted to hear more when it suddenly ended. Gotta say this mix was sick throughout the entire set

    Tough choice but gotta go with Kinsanity. His mix had the best combination of energy, complexity, and sick tunes. Too good.
