Earl Sweatshirt Interviewed by The New Yorker

Arguably the music industry's most missing individual has finally spoken up. There have been numerous rumors floating around the web speculating on OFWGKTA's Earl Sweatshirt's whereabouts. The New Yorker has found Odd Future's mysterious member and talked to him about the "Free Earl" campaign and some misconceptions.

“Please listen: I am not being held against my will… Initially I was really pleased that all these people claimed that they wanted me released because I thought that translated into “they care.” So time progresses and the fan base gets bigger and the “Free Earl” chants get louder but now with the “Free Earl” chants come a barely indirect “Fuck Earl’s Mom” and in the blink of an eye my worry changes from “will there still be this hype when I get back” to “Oh shit I just inspired a widespread movement of people who are dedicated to the downfall of my mom…” The only thing I need as of right now is space… Space means no more “Free Earl.” If you sincerely care then I appreciate the gesture, but since you know the hard facts from the source you no longer need to worry. I miss home. I don’t have any definite date though. Even if I did I don’t know if I’d tell you. You’ll hear from me without a doubt when I’m ready.”

    He is in a boarding school, which im sure everyone whos reads this probly knows already. His mom didnt like the group or his music or how it sounded. She worried about her son. And honestly, can you blame her? The shit they talk about in thier music. Yeah its dope as fuck and im a huge OF fan but if you see it from her perspective, its obviously gonna worry her. Earl isnt a killer or a rapist. hes a person. a rapper. thats it. and he needs to prove to hisw mom that he is a good guy and he only raps like that because its different. its just music. OF has a right to say fuck earls mom because she took away a best friend. i get that. but we dont. no fan has the right to do that, just cause the group is . you dont know him, or any of them. neither do i.  earl just wants his mom and his family and all that to not be a part of his image. but thats kinda too late. either way. when he comes home, he will be changing the game. no doubt. I only wrote this cause i believe that he deserves privacy. Wolf Gang.

    I totally agree with your statement. His mom is just doing what most mom's would and that's protecting the innocence of her child and letting him be just that...a child, I mean c'mon we've seen this before and we've seen moms fail at it and how their children turn out to be  (Micheal Jackson's mom). Mike was great I loved his music but their no denying the man had some internal issues from missing out on his childhood. We as OF fans have no right to chant those things about her, we don't know the back story of it all we just see what's in front of us, and obviously Earl isn't happy about those chants.

    Earl will be back, when he's ready..just like he said and when he does return OF will have even more hype than now, it'll be interesting to watch

     Thebe is a prodigy.  Dude is so talented.  It's weird that journalists intruding in these kids' lives have tainted the mystique of 'Free Earl,' but I'm glad that he's not being held against his will and it sounds like he's having a good time.  

    that's kind of a lot of pressure to come back to, whenever he does.  But let him live.  Earl's mom is straight with me.  It's crazy how fast these kids have blown up practically overnight.  Shout to HT for the mention in the article and for being there from the beginning

    I'm glad they finally came out with some information about him. Like it can only be so long where this mystique starts to become destructive. Rumors start to spread, and things get tossed around that are skewed and completely. I knew of Thebe and know people who were close with him, and they all agree that he certainly had destructive issues. He's in my grade and he's just a kid. As precocious as he is, he needs to have stability. I'm glad his family could shed some light on this situation and make us realize that he is a human being just like any of us.
