Kanye West – Runaway

After numerous hints and teasers, Kanye West presents his ambitious movie project Runaway. The 35-minute video displays a great deal of sophisticated artistry on multiple levels. Runaway follows Selita Ebanks as the Phoenix on the side of Kanye's character Griffin. Their relationship highlights a discrimnation-theme backed by nine songs off his forthcoming My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy-album and Nicki Minaj's narrating skills. Also make sure to check out the entire Kanye West-interview with MTV's Sway right after the premiere. Find it below.

The white people wear black and are the performers.. the black people wear white and are the dinners.. the Phoenix is light skinned and represents the contrast of the two.. yeah that's right I just brought race into this analytical rant.

The ego. Does he really think he is all that? "Outfits" - gimme a break man. Check how he wiped his nose with his hand and then shook homeboys hand at the end of the interview. Classy. Love the music though.

I think he had good concepts, but didn't really capture them good on film. There were some really good shots here and there, but the overall product felt forced. And a lot of the dialogue was really cheesy.

He still makes great music though.

So even if he's a douche with an ego the size of Manhattan nobody can say anything?

I like his music, a lot but the ego sometimes it's like..dude, stfu.

  • ElJaguario

I think he has some room to gloat. Everyone is on his stuff right, and no one can get enough. A million people in his place would be a hundred times more cocky.

  • http://twitter.com/SantaCruzMart Mart’ J

"Everyone"? Hardly. Most people dislike him.

  • Aaron

He is cocky, but he doesn't really say anything unreasonable. I see his comment about being like Tarantino being taken out of context though.

Can we all agree that Kanye is a great producer, and he at least tried to be a director. He clearly likes film, even at a cursory level (most people don't know who Kubrick or Fellini is so props). He worked hard on it and it looked nice. I watched it again and it was still good so he succeeded in my book.

I want the version of Power you hear in this. Badly.

That music video/ "film" represents Kanye perfectly. The video is overly pretentious and egotistical. Yet at the same time there are moments of absolute brilliance. Some of the sequences are just so powerful. Take for example the runaway and power segments. Obviously Kanye has great taste and style, it just looks absolutely beautiful. The problem is that there is absolutely no substance. That's the same problem with his music. It is powerful and evokes a mood perfectly, It's just that his lyrics don't follow through. He has nothing worth rapping about. Then you have someone like Lupe who has so much more to say. His lyrics go a lot further. If Kayne wants to transcend the rap genre he needs to stop rapping about the "Me Myself and I" and start rapping about "Life" as it pertains to society as a whole or at least issues that people care about.

To say that this video is an homage to Fellini and Kubrick is a joke. But... you gotta give props for trying something different than the million other g6 music videos.

who gives a shit what he thinks! The music sounds great!
